Every Halloween, a myriad of eloquent tales are spun from the deepest darkest reaches of the human mind, to scare andfrighten in spirit of this dark holiday. Some stories seem almost cogent, some anything but. And then there are some that thrive on the thin line that separates reality from the accursed nightmares of imagination, and live on the very brink of becoming both . . . such as this one.
Cody raced down the hallway, glancing through the side windows as he past. It was bright and cloudless day. Sunlightreflected off his light brown hair, making it shimmer and a cool breeze licked at his tan skinl. It was a perfedct day to be outside. Cody wished he was going to P.E. But trhat wasn’t going to happen. Sighing, he reverted his gaze back to the hallway, wondering why chemistry class had to be so far away. He had to resist the warm sunlight washing across his back, relaxing him, seeking to impede his race to class.
Cody opened the door to Ms. Harkam’s class and rushed in, huffing and puffing.second and then told him to take his seat.
“You’re late Mr. Todds,” asserted Ms. Harkam, as she marked him tardy.
“Sorry, my last class was a long way away,” Cody defended. Ms. Harkam stared at his smiling, innocent expression for a
“Today class,” Ms. Harkam announced, “we will be experimenting with chemical poweders.” She made Cody and the rest ofthe students right down some notes and convoluted directions-some of which were almost cryptic to them, then directed them to the lab.
Everyone started pouring and measuring chemicals. As Cody turned to adjust a measurement, a kid next to him slipped andknocked over all of Cody’s work. The chemicals splashed into the powder box and suddenly, a cloud of blue powder hit Cody like a lead weight. No one else caught the chemical cloud; it vanished as Cody collapsed to the floor.
