Chapter 2: The Book of Ancients

Eric had had it. He had been minding his own business, deep in thought of what he was going to have to deal with the instant he stepped foot in his doorway
when he arrived home. They weren’t pleasant thoughts either. It would only make his day even worse. He’d been in a bad mood all day. More than usual in fact.
Ever since this morning’s reading in English class when he’d had the odd sense that it was more a scripted argument he was having with an adversary than a
reading from a book he couldn’t shake this sulky bad mood. It couldn’t be possible. In his opinion, the girl who was reading with him, Rachel, was the prettiest in his class. Yes that was her name. Rachel. He’d learned her name the first day he’d transferred to Colander Middle School-the first day he’d ever seen her. But what he sensed from that other boy, Toby Kaita, was more than just friendship toward Rachel. He was sure of it. And that put him in a sour temper for the rest of yet another lousy, miserable day. So when one of Toby’s apparent friends he’d heard whispering in English collided into him, completely oblivious as to where he was going and even more outrageous, ignorant of the smoldering temper that had slowly been building in Eric all afternoon, Eric couldn’t take it anymore. He exploded with vicious rage foaming at his clenched teeth. It was no use trying to keep it in any longer, he was going to take someone out one way or another today.
Eric confronted the taller boy. Thoughts of everything he knew about the boy from the last few weeks whipped through his mind, caught in a tempest of
misplaced rage. He was the predicted captain for the next year’s basketball team. An impressive player. Tall. Strong. More than capable of taking care of himself in a schoolyard fight. But Eric was sure he was quicker-especially when he was in a temper. His name was Lan or something. Wouldn’t matter. Eric came from a city environment. Not this half rural, half suburban “Kansas” he had been dumped in. He had some martial arts experience. But Eric also had street experience. When you live in a city like where he came from you have to know how to hold your own. Eric looked around. <In case of a gang up> he thought. Against the throbbing in his ears from the pulse of his heart, Eric heard his adversary jokingly ask if Eric wanted a fight. <Disarming tone?> Eric thought. <Too late.> His adrenaline was already pounding through his veins.
Eric slid into a boxer’s stance. “Yeah! Let’s go!” He growled back. Now the boy called Lan stopped smiling. He could tell Eric was serious.
